Hallock spent decades surveying geologic sites for the perfect place to put his vineyard and the volcanic landscape in Oregon brought him here. Hallock has spent a lot of time working to restore the natural ecology of the landscape. The vineyard is surrounded by native oaks and populated with native brush and insects. Recently, bees have finally repopulated the area, and they are essential to a well-balanced ecosystem. Carrabella Winery’s fields are sustainable and avoid using harsh chemicals and pesticides. Because of the gravelly ground they plant in, they’re also able to forgo irrigation. This process saves hundreds of gallons of water. It’s no wonder Hallock spent nearly a decade looking for the perfect farm like this one. Then you might want to stop by the Sherwood Historical Society’s Heritage Center to visit their two main attractions: Smock House and Morback House.These relics of a bygone day have been maintained for many years to educate the local community on those who came before them. Smock House When someone decides to buy a new home, you might hear them say that they’re “moving house.” They certainly don’t mean they’re literally moving their entire home, but that’s exactly what happened to Smock House in 2003! Smock House was owned by the founder of Sherwood, James Christopher Smock and dates back to 1868. When the building fell into disarray, a group of dedicated volunteers removed Smock House from its foundation on First Street. The house was then placed on an oversized trailer and delivered to its new location on Park Street, where it has since received some nice upgrades. These days, it has an inviting appearance as a living historical site, and now sports a wooden porch in the front, as well as a ramp in the back for easier accessibility. A chair and bench flank its front door to invite passersby to discover the history still very much alive in their town. Morback House Smock House was moved right next door to Morback House, which functions as the Sherwood Heritage Museum. It’s been around since 1892 and was owned and named after Joseph Edward Morback. It has a rich history of other functions, such as city hall, the library, and even the police station! Visitors are welcome to take a tour and see plenty of vintage furniture, instruments, photographs, and knick knacks that were once a part of someone’s life. Although it isn’t possible to know the whole story of what life was like back then, this museum gives visitors the freedom to imagine it. Pioneer Days The Sherwood Historical Society values engagement with the local community. To inspire the next generation of historians, the society invites local schoolchildren to their annual Pioneer Days. Volunteers dress in traditional pioneer clothing and show the students around the museum; they’ll even get to see what an old school room used to look like! History of the Butteville Store The Butteville store’s history begins in the mid-to-late 19 th century as a bourbon distillery and wine and liquor store. Over the next century, it would transition into a general store and change hands more than 11 times. Regardless of its change in ownership, it would serve as a staple of the community for more than 150 years. In 1999, the store was donated to the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, where it’s served the community in a variety of ways, including as a: General store Art gallery Café Community center (as part of Champoeg State Park). Through it all, the Historic Butteville Store still stands. The Butteville Store Today Today, the Butteville store is a specialty food store and café, serving the local community and Champoeg State Park visitors. They serve a long list of items, including: Hand-dipped ice cream cones Deli sandwiches Drinks Camper-specific food products They also feature live music and dinner service on the first and third Saturday evenings during the winter and every Saturday between April and September. Saturday nights at the Butteville store include: Live music A 3-course dinner Wine and beer Dinner and music cost just $25 per person and wine and beer are available for an additional cost. Space is limited, so be sure to call to make a reservation and be there promptly at 6:00 PM to be seated. The Rotary Club of Wilsonville, Oregon has been serving the community for over forty years since it was founded in 1975. They’re dedicated to both local and international service projects in order to create a better environment for everyone. Through clubs, fundraising events, and donations, they’re able to fund organizations and charities. Wilsonville Rotary Programs There are a variety of different programs designed to help people of all ages within the community. Wilsonville Chess For Success Club This club was created to help children develop critical thinking skills, a greater ability to focus, and an improved attention span, which results in stronger academic performance, patience, concentration and a focused attitude. Through A Child’s Eyes (TACE) The TACE program was created in 2001 to help children with incarcerated parents deal with social and academic challenges. They work directly with local women’s prisons to create bonding opportunities between mothers and their children, which includes a summer event featuring interactive games, crafts, and a BBQ. Scholarships Every spring, the Wilsonville Rotary club chooses to provide college scholarships for high school students who are demonstrating outstanding service in leadership and academic achievement. They recognize that hardworking young people are our future and want to reward them for all that they do. Good Eggs Omelet and Pancake Breakfasts A few times a year, this club throws the signature omelet and pancake breakfast to raise money for charities or for local events, like Veteran’s Day Appreciation and WERK Day Cleanup. The money has been raised for local youth sports teams, schools, national and international natural disaster funds, and fire victims, just to name a few. How To Donate and Join To donate, you can send money via PayPal using a credit or debit card or by mailing a check to the Wilsonville Rotary Foundation. Every year, they also throw the annual Heart of Gold Celebration, which consists of an awards banquet, raffle events, silent and live auctions, a dinner and a bar–and all the proceeds go to service projects.
