If you’re looking for an adventurous SUV to take you around the Wilsonville, Portland, and Woodburn area, then you may have come across popular models like the Jeep Wrangler and Toyota RAV4. While both are highly capable SUVs, they offer very distinctive flavors.
To help you decide which is better suited to your tastes, the team at Wilsonville CDJR put together this comparison of the 2020 Jeep Wrangler vs. 2020 Toyota RAV4.
When you look under the hood of the Jeep Wrangler and Toyota RAV4, you’ll find many similarities. For example, they both have an available 8-speed automatic transmission that helps to keep your fuel economy high, especially during highway cruising.
They also have an available all-wheel drive (AWD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD) system that may improve your grip during winter commutes or off-road excursions.
A place where they differ, however, is engine output, as you can see in the table below:
|
2020 Jeep Wrangler |
2020 Toyota RAV4 |
Standard Engine |
2.0L turbo I-4 |
2.5L I-4 |
Standard Horsepower |
270 horsepower |
203 horsepower |
Standard Torque |
295 lb-ft of torque |
184 lb-ft of torque |
While the Toyota stops here with the standard engine, the Jeep has an additional gas-powered engine option. If you upgrade your Wrangler to this 3.6L Pentastar® V6 engine, you’ll get a maximum output of 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque.
Unfortunately, the RAV4 doesn’t make the same kind of engine power available.
When you look at the exteriors of both SUVs, you can clearly see a big difference in how they present their strengths. The RAV4, for example, sports a more classic city SUV shape, with its rounded edges and rear spoiler.
The Wrangler takes a different approach. It reads as a more rugged exterior with a shape reminiscent of its World War II battlefield roots.
We see this design difference most clearly in their ground clearances:
With less ground clearance, the Toyota RAV4 may have to turn back a bit sooner than the Jeep Wrangler when faced with a particularly difficult challenge.
Their body styles make a difference in their interiors, as well. As 2-row SUVs, both the Jeep Wrangler and Toyota RAV4 seat five passengers comfortably, with plenty of trunk space behind the second row. They also let you fold down the rear row to open up even more cargo space.
If you need to carry a lot of gear, you may find that the Wrangler is better suited to the challenge, with its total cargo capacity of 72.4 cubic feet compared to 69.3 cubic feet in the RAV4.
If you’re a nature lover, then you’ll probably be happy to hear that both SUVs in our comparison have open-air design elements. The Toyota RAV4 lets in plenty of fresh air and sunlight with its Panoramic Glass Roof sunroof feature that spans the entire length of the cabin.
The Jeep Wrangler, on the other hand, provides three open-air roof options:
These give you three different ways to enjoy the outdoors. The Sunrider® soft top, for example, can be removed completely to leave nothing between you and the open sky. Plus, the Wrangler lets you fold down the windshield and remove the doors to get even closer to nature.
The RAV4 doesn’t give you similar options for getting close to the outdoors while you drive.
After comparing the Jeep Wrangler vs. Toyota RAV4, the team at our Jeep dealership found that the Wrangler has more to offer to adventurous types in the Portland, Wilsonville, and Woodburn area.
